EUGENE, OR--MAY 16, 2013: Let this be your summer. The Arts and Business Alliance of Eugene presents Create! Eugene, a month-long celebration of the arts in Eugene and surrounding communities. Create! Eugene offers the opportunity to spend your vacation in and around Eugene taking various arts and creative workshops from artists and artisans during the month of August. Additionally, Create! Eugene’s partner hotels will offer special discounted rates to participating visitors, making your vacation as affordable as it is fulfilling.
Let this be your time. Pursue a fresh passion, follow an old dream, or simply take up a new hobby. There are so many options to choose from. Fiber artist Tylar Merrill offers several felting workshops at her quaint Eugene studio in which students can make their own felt handbags, shawls, and other garments. The Emerald Art Center hosts acclaimed watercolorist Ken Austin, who believes the history of art is the history of change, and encourages his students to experiment with abstract painting elements that challenge established convention. The Oregon Supported Living Program offers multiple Arts & Culture workshops which promote OSLP’s mission to “break down barriers to participation in the arts for people of all abilities and builds bridges to a more diverse and inclusive community.” At Body Now!, Ruby McConnell demystifies and debunks stereotypical notions of belly dancing, teaching the style as the complex, layered and improvisational art form it truly is. And the brand new, cutting edge Gallery at the Watershed hosts multiple workshops--not to mention the fine art--of some of Oregon’s best painters, including Michael Orwick, Renee Manford, and Jeff White.
And that’s not all. Create! Eugene features so much more: the Plein Air Paint Out, a plein air painting competition in two parts: a traditional paint-out with $5000 in prizes, juried by Portland artist Eric Jacobsen, and a Facebook competition (taking entries now!) featuring the chance to win a two-day workshop with Mr. Jacobsen and a night at the Eugene Hilton. Also, Ballet intensives and summer camps at two of the nation’s preeminent dance schools, Ballet Fantastique and the Eugene Ballet Academy. Several painting workshops led by celebrated artists from across the nation, including Roberta Remy, Eric Jacobsen, and Victoria Brooks. Other offerings include classes in ceramics, quilting, modern and African dance, stained glass, and jazz performance.
Let this be your getaway. Beautifully situated in the heart of the Willamette Valley, Eugene offers convenient access to much of Oregon’s natural beauty, not to mention the culinary mecca of downtown, with its diverse selection of world-class restaurants and craft breweries. Then, take your pick of the region’s finest wineries and vineyards. From rural charm to cosmopolitan sophistication, Eugene has something for everyone--come see what if has for you.
